The appearance of the skin is mainly determined by its color, its texture, the skin surface lipids, and the presence of sebaceous, hair follicle and sweat glands. The skin is the largest organ of the body, and its components consist of epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin, and consists of an array of different cells. The epidermis also provides the most important barrier function to protect the inner dermis and hypodermis against microorganisms and other foreign elements. The epidermis contains five major types of cells – the basal, spinous, granular, lucid and cornified cells. Basal and spinous cells form the stratum basale and stratum spinosum, respectively, and provide most of the structural strength to the epidermis. They are firmly attached to a basement membrane and form a basal lamina, which lies just below the stratum basale. Glandular cells secrete sebum, a lipophilic lipid film that lubricates the skin and protects it from the environment. Scruffy or fine hair follicles, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands lie beneath the epidermis in the dermis, and also secrete products such as sebum and perspiration. The hypodermis lies below the dermis and contains blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerves. It also contains collagen, elastin and ground substances, which form a supportive and elastic structure for the dermis. The hypodermis is not present in humans, but in other mammals such as rodents and rabbits. Anatomy & Physiology of Skin.
